Electric ranges and cooktops
A burner stays on high, or won't heat. That's usually the burner's control switch or the element itself. On coil tops, check where the coil plugs in. Scorch marks there mean the plug-in spot has burned.
A cracked glass cooktop. Stop using it. The glass top can often be replaced on its own, depending on whether the part is available for your model.
The touchpad doesn't respond. Check whether a control lock is on. If it isn't, the touchpad or control board may have failed.
Ovens that won't heat right
- Slow to preheat (gas). The oven igniter weakens over time. It can still glow but not get hot enough to light the oven.
- Burns the bottoms (electric). Often a bake element that's partly burned out, or a convection fan that isn't running.
- The temperature seems off. Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack and give it 20 minutes. If it's off by more than about 25 degrees, the temperature sensor or control needs a look. Many ovens also have a setting to adjust it.
Gas burners
If a burner clicks but won't light, clean the burner head and make sure the cap sits flat. Gas ranges need regular cleaning to work right. If it still won't light, or keeps clicking when it's off, the igniter or spark module needs a check.
Higher-end and dual-fuel ranges
We work on Wolf, Viking, Thermador, and DCS, along with the everyday names. Dual-fuel ranges have a gas cooktop over an electric oven, so they have both kinds of parts. We're comfortable with both.

Questions we hear a lot
What if I smell gas around the range?
Get everyone outside first, without flipping lights or switches. Call your gas company or 911 once you're out. We'll handle the repair once it's safe.
My oven door locked during self-clean and won't open.
Let it cool down completely. If it's still locked, don't force it. The latch or control may need service.
Can you hook up a new gas range?
Yes. We install new gas ranges and check them before we leave. See appliance installation.
Do you come to Stuarts Draft?
Yes. Stuarts Draft folks are our neighbors, and we're out that way regularly.
