What's your dryer doing?
Shuts off partway through. Dryers have a safety cutoff that trips when they get too hot. If it keeps happening, the real cause is usually poor airflow: built-up lint, a crushed hose behind the dryer, or a full vent.
Tumbles, but no heat. On an electric dryer, it's usually the heating element or a small safety fuse. On a gas dryer, peek through the little window at the bottom front. If the igniter glows but no flame lights, the gas valve is a likely cause. If it doesn't glow at all, the igniter may be bad.
Won't turn. If the motor hums but the drum doesn't move, the belt may have broken. If there's no sound at all, it's often the door switch, the start button, a fuse, or the power.
It's loud. Squealing is usually a worn pulley or glides. A steady thump is often a worn drum roller. Grinding means it's time to stop running it.
Give your vent a look
Older houses and basement laundry rooms often have long vents with several turns, and those fill with lint faster. Outside, the flap on the vent can stick shut, or birds can build a nest in it.
It's time for a cleaning if you notice:
- One load takes two cycles
- The laundry room gets hot
- A burnt-lint smell
Lint catches fire easily, so don't put this one off. We clean vents too. See dryer vent cleaning.

“Brandon Marshall did an excellent job repairing my dryer. He was quick, efficient, and very professional. He explained everything clearly, fixed the issue fast, and clearly knew what he was doing. … I highly recommend Brandon for any appliance repair.”
Questions we hear a lot
Is the foil or plastic hose behind my dryer OK?
Those thin hoses crush easily and trap lint, so they aren't recommended. A rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is safer and moves more air.
My dryer is gas. Can you still fix it?
Yes, gas and electric. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside first.
Should I replace the washer and dryer together?
Not necessarily. If one works fine, there's no rule that both have to go. We'll tell you honestly whether the broken one is worth fixing.
Do you install dryers?
Yes. We install washers and dryers and leave them connected and ready to use.
